Herring festival in Norway attracts killer whales and humpback whales from October to February

From October to February, huge amounts of herring migrate from the Atlantic Ocean up along the northwest coast of Norway, where they first winter in the fjords far north, then spawn further south. The herring attracts predators, including the beautiful and majestic killer whale, making it ideal for curious people like us to turn their noses towards Norway to catch a glimpse of the wonderful animals in their own element.

Both killer whales and humpback whales come all the way into the fjords to exploit the food source and eat their fill of herring. The herring makes it easier to get close to the big animals, and we therefore have very good opportunities to snorkel and freedive with killer whales and humpback whales.

Killer whales are both curious and beautiful

Killer whales are a majestic animal and for many one of those animals you never really get to experience in their natural habitat. The killer whale is the world’s largest species of dolphin and is among the world’s largest and most powerful predators, which with their bodies up to 10 meters long, can weigh 9 tons and live in families with as many as 40 animals together.

The killer whales, with their characteristic black-and-white markings and the males’ up to 2 meter high dorsal fin, are unmistakable. Their characteristics also make them one of the most beautiful and dramatic creatures in the oceans, which is why the experience when the big giant swims past you in the Arctic water is quite exceptional.

The solid expedition ship Strønstrad will be your home on the Arctic expedition

The Arctic expedition takes place on board the expedition ship Strønstad, which will be your home for a little less than a week. The ship can transport us around, so we always have the best conditions for spotting killer whales and humpback whales. The ship is built to handle expeditions in the harsh conditions that the Arctic has to offer and is an excellent base for our killer whale expedition in the northernmost part of Norway. After a long day of one wild experience after another, you can jump into the steaming hot tub while looking for the beautiful Northern Lights.

Our next trip to Norway is: 20th of November 2024 till 1st of December 2024
